The election of Javier Milea as President of Argentina opens the door for “radical changes” in the grain sector policy. This was stated by the country’s main agricultural associations on Sunday evening, Reuters reports.

Argentina is one of the world’s leading exporters of soybeans, corn, wheat and beef. However, its grain and livestock producers have for years demanded the abolition of taxes and limits that they believe restrict grain and meat exports.

Milei promises to cut taxes. He also wants to eventually close the central bank and dollarize the economy.

“A great opportunity has opened up to work together to radically change current policies,” the Argentine Rural Society (SRA) said in a statement.

CONINAGRO, another of the largest agricultural associations in Argentina, said that “we are at the beginning of a new phase that we hope will bring prosperity to all Argentines”, welcoming the president-elect.

“The new president, in our view, should urgently focus on addressing inflation, backwardness and the exchange rate gap, and freeing up markets to increase exports. And then quickly tackle comprehensive tax reform (DEX, IIBB and IIGG), simplify regulation, encourage investment through manufacturing and agribioindustry with clear, lasting incentives and regulations,” CONINAGRO said.

Meanwhile, the Argentine Rural Confederations (CRA) called on Milei to work with the agricultural sector and demanded tax deregulation.
