The backlog in grain exports from Ukraine decreased to 16% in October
Grain exports from the beginning of the 2022-2023 marketing year (MY, July 2022 – June 2023) as of October 31 amounted to 12.913 million tons against 19.41 million tons on the corresponding date of the previous MY.
According to the State Customs Service, corn became the only grain crop that showed an increase in exports in the current season — three times, up to 6.843 million tons.
The export of other major grains decreased, in particular:
- wheat – 2.5 times, up to 4.936 million tons;
- barley – by 4.1 times, up to 1.087 million tons.
In addition, 36.9 thousand tons of flour were exported against 43.4 thousand tons a year earlier, including wheat – 34.1 thousand tons against 43 thousand tons.
Grain exports in October amounted to 4.221 million tons against 5.047 million tons last year.
At the same time, the export of corn increased by 2.6 times to 1.999 million tons. The export of other major grains decreased, in particular:
- wheat – by 44.8%, up to 1.895 million tons;
- barley – 2.2 times, up to 313 thousand tons.
In addition, 12,300 tons of flour was exported in October against 6,900 tons a year earlier, in particular wheat — 12,000 tons against 6,800 tons.
At the end of July, representatives of Ukraine, Turkey and the UN signed in Istanbul the Initiative on the safe transportation of grain and food products from Ukrainian ports, which is designed to partially unblock the Ukrainian sea ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk and “Pivdenny” for the export of grain and fertilizers. The UN and Turkey signed a similar agreement with Russia.
The first loaded vessel under the initiative left Odesa port on August 1. The first vessel to be loaded entered the port of Chornomorsk on August 7 and left the port on August 13.
Since the launch of the first ship, it has been possible to export more than 9 million tons of food, of which more than 5 million tons — to the countries of Africa and Asia. As part of the World Food Program under the auspices of the UN, 190,000 tons of Ukrainian wheat were sent to countries on the brink of famine.
