Taiwan and the United States have taken a major step in strengthening bilateral trade by signing an agreement that opens the Taiwanese market to U.S. agricultural products, including pork. This deal creates new opportunities for American producers and could significantly reshape the agricultural trade structure in the region.

A key element of the agreement is a substantial reduction of tariffs — up to 99% on various product categories. Preferential access applies to fruits and vegetables, wheat, beef, dairy products, and pork, making U.S. goods more competitive in Taiwan after years of high trade barriers.

In addition, the agreement addresses non-tariff barriers that previously restricted U.S. imports. Taiwan has committed to regulate and prevent restrictions on the import of beef, pork, poultry, and potatoes for processing, which will allow higher shipment volumes and improve the quality of products available to consumers.

U.S. pork gains new growth prospects: it had long lagged behind competitors from the EU and Canada. The tariff reductions and removal of non-tariff barriers create conditions for significant export growth, although American producers will need to actively rebuild consumer trust in Taiwan, where local and European products have traditionally been preferred.

The agreement also expands cooperation in investment and government procurement, offering additional business opportunities for both countries. Opening Taiwan’s market to U.S. agricultural products is a major step toward strengthening economic ties and could significantly alter the trade landscape in the region.
