Taiwan flour millers commit to US wheat purchases

The Taiwan Flour Millers Association (TFMA) signed a letter of intent to purchase 3.6 million tonnes of US wheat, valued at approximately $1.29 billion, from 2026 to 2029. The agreement was formalized with representatives of US Wheat Associates (USW) during a ceremony on September 17 in Washington, DC.
In the 2024-2025 marketing year, Taiwan ranked as the fifth largest market for US wheat, importing nearly 949,000 tonnes of hard red winter, hard red spring, and soft white wheat, according to USW. Since 1998, 14 Taiwan Agricultural Goodwill Missions have visited the United States, facilitating the export of 27.4 million tonnes of wheat worth an estimated $8 billion. Jim Pellman, chairman of USW and a wheat farmer from North Dakota, stated, “Taiwan and the United States share a close partnership built on a commitment to wheat quality and reliability.”
The Taiwan Goodwill Mission aims to strengthen mutual understanding, cooperation, and trade ties with the United States. In addition to the wheat agreement, the delegation signed letters of intent with the US Soybean Export Council and the US Grains & Bioproducts Council for the purchase of US soybeans and corn. Following their visit to Washington, DC, the flour millers will travel to South Dakota, Montana, and Idaho to observe US wheat production and meet the farmers supplying high-quality wheat.
The partnership between TFMA, USW, and US wheat producers, spanning nearly six decades, is rooted in trust and collaboration. TFMA representatives will also sign additional letters of intent, acknowledging the role of state wheat partners in ensuring a reliable supply of premium wheat. “We are grateful to the Taiwan Goodwill Mission for visiting the United States and to our TFMA counterparts for their strong preference for US wheat,” Pellman added.
