Sugar production is expected to increase in the UK and the EU
According to Farmers Guide, British Sugar has processed more than two million tons of sugar beet at its four mills in the current MY 2024/25 season.
UK Sugar’s current season sugar output is expected to be higher than last year’s, which is expected to be around 1.2 million tons.
Last MY 2023/24 season, the country processed more than 8 million tons of sugar beet and produced 1.1 million tons of sugar. With total annual sugar consumption of 1.6 million tons, the UK imports about 0.5 million tons of sugar to meet domestic needs.
At the same time, expected EU beet sugar production in the new 2024/25 MY season will increase by 4% to 15.4 million tons as a result of a 6% increase in sugar beet acreage and higher beet sugar production in Germany and France. In the new season, EU sugar consumption should remain at the same level as last season at 16.5 million tons. Sugar imports should increase to 2.4 million tons due to imports from Ukraine, while exports will decrease to 1.1 million tons.
