Strategic grain warehouses to be built in northern Sweden in case of war

The Swedish government has decided to build a grain reserve for the northern regions of the country, which could be cut off in the event of war or armed conflict. The Ministry of Agriculture has received the relevant order, the Swedish government’s press service reported.

The reserves will be created in the northernmost regions – Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Jämtland. The budget will allocate 575 million Swedish kronor, which is approximately 60 million dollars.

The grain will be regularly updated so that it remains fresh and suitable for use.

Swedish Minister of Civil Defense Karl-Oskar Bolin explained that the north of the country is of strategic importance for the country’s defense, which is why the first reserves are being created there.

Agriculture Minister Peter Kullgren added that the government plans to build grain storage facilities in other parts of the country in the future.

Funds for the expansion of this program are already planned in the state budget for 2026–2028. It is also known that Sweden will increase its defense spending by almost $ 3 billion to approach NATO standards.

In September, Russia significantly increased its hybrid attacks on European countries, including NATO members, using drones and military aircraft to violate their airspace.
