Soybeans in Parana 80% Harvested vs. 60% Last Year

Farmers in the state of Parana in southern Brazil had harvested 80% of their 2023/24 soybeans as of earlier this week compared to 60% last year according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). This represents an advance of 7% for the week and is the fastest harvest pace in eight years. The harvest is accelerated because the soybeans were planted earlier than normal last September and periods of hot and dry weather during the growing season accelerated the plant development.

Safrinha corn planting in the state was 96% complete earlier this week compared to 77% last year. This represents an advance of 5% for the week. The safrinha corn is rated 8% average and 92% good. In general, the safrinha corn was planted within the ideal planting window which should reduce the risk of frost before the crop is mature, especially in western and southern Parana where the potential frost risk is greatest.

Farmers are expected to plant 2.4 million hectares of safrinha corn, which is down 2.6% compared to last year. Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil responsible for 15.2% of the 2023/24 acreage. Mato Grosso is the largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil with 42% of the acreage.
