Soybean sowing in Argentina 2024/25 started without problems – Buenos Aires Grain Exchange

The Exchange also noted that soybean planting in Argentina 2024/25 has gotten off to a smooth start, mainly due to heavy rainfall in recent weeks. It is estimated that acreage is currently at about 3% of the 19 million hectares planned for the country’s main cash crop.

Argentine farms planted to corn may surpass the 6.3 million hectares (15.6 million acres) planned for the current crop due to a decline in the cicada insect pesky to the region after recent crops suffered significant losses to the pest, a major grain exchange said Thursday.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BdeC) also noted that rising profits will be an additional factor in the South American country’s corn crop growth in 2024/25.
Argentina is a major agricultural powerhouse, ranking third in the world in corn exports after Brazil and the US.

In its weekly crop report, BdeC cited “low numbers” of cicadas in much of the country’s prime farmland, which could lead to an increase in corn plantings for the 2024/25 crop.

The small cicada insect sucks sap from plants, carrying the bacteria that causes maize growth disease, which has killed vast areas of farmland in recent cycles.
Last season, cicada infestation led to maize losses estimated at 10 million tons.

BdeC estimates that maize planting has now reached almost 35% of the estimated area under harvest, which is expected to yield 47 million tons.

According to the BdeC report, the 2024/25 wheat crop is almost 8% harvested, but the southern parts of the main farming region will require rains in the near future.

The exchange estimates the wheat harvest to be 18.6 million tons.
