Sowing season is delayed in Ukraine due to prolonged rains
Low temperatures and heavy rains in April resulted in overwatering of the soil. Therefore, spring field work, in particular the sowing of early spring crops, has been delayed.
This is reported by the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food with reference to the information of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences.
Intense rainfall in the form of heavy rains fell throughout the country. According to scientific institutions of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, in Kyiv region 27.8 mm (146.3% of the average annual rate), in Vinnitsa – 22.3 mm (124% of normal), in Lviv region – 20.9 mm (131% of normal), Kharkiv region – 20 mm (123% of normal), in Zhytomyr region soil is also maximally saturated with moisture.
At the same time, a characteristic feature of this April is not so much the total amount of precipitation, as the virtual absence of sunny days without rain, which are necessary for physical drying of the soil surface, which against the background of unfinished large volume of spring field work creates very serious problems.
According to scientists, early ravine crops sown in March are in the “inputs” phase. In general, the state of crops is good. At the same time, in some fields with lowering of the relief for the fourth week in a row, there are valleys with water, where plants have a depressed condition, pale yellow foliage and characterized by all signs of soaking.
The Academy notes that due to the current meteorological situation, one of the most urgent works on winter wheat and other cereal crops is their protection against diseases, pests and weeds.
