Russia: Oilseeds crop forecast, 2020
In the 2020/21 season a 2% decrease in oilseed plantings is expected (14.3 Ml ha vs 14.6 Ml ha in 2019), mainly due to sunflower seed.
At the same time, the weather factor may lead to the same scenario as last year, when sunflower acreage, instead of a planned decrease, actually set a new record of 8.6 Ml ha, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Moisture deficits and April’s frosts in the Southern federal district killed part of winter grains – they may be replanted with sunflower as the most attractive crop compared to corn.
According to UkrAgroConsult’s estimates, provided the planted area remains as large as forecast and yield is at the three-year average, the oilseeds crop will fall by 10%, and if the optimistic scenario comes true and sunflower plantings hit a new high, the oilseeds crop will fall by at most 5%.
