Romania. Warm weather makes plants more susceptible to winterkill
Weather conditions. Air temperatures in Romania last week were again above long-term normal for this time (4..6°C). The average air temperature varied within a range of -1…+12°С. Thermometers in the southeast even showed +16°C.
Moisture supply. This past week, effective precipitation only occurred in the southwest (up to 25 mm), while the rest of the country received at most 5-10 mm at the time. The central regions are short of precipitation and soil moisture. Severe soil drought persists in the southeast.
The warm weather makes plants more sensitive to temperature swings and more susceptible to winterkill if severe frost occurs. Too high air temperatures cause winter crops to grow and consume more sugar in their tillering nodes, reports UkrAgroConsult.
