Romania bans imports of chicken and eggs from Ukraine without a license

Romania has expanded the list of goods from Ukraine that require a license to import. According to Euractive, the government made the decision following complaints from local farmers about low prices for Ukrainian products.

According to Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu, Romanian poultry producers are facing a “serious problem” due to the import of Ukrainian eggs and poultry meat, which are sold at prices far below the cost of Romanian production.

After discussions with representatives of the poultry sector, the government decided to add eggs and poultry meat to the list of products that can be imported from Ukraine only with a license.

The list also includes grains, seeds, flour, and sugar.

As a member of the European Union, Romania has to comply with certain production requirements in the poultry sector, which makes the costs “30% higher than in Ukraine,” Barbu added.

He emphasized that there is no ban on imports of Ukrainian eggs and poultry meat.

After the European Commission decided in September 2023 not to extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain to five neighboring EU countries, Romania introduced licenses for imports of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine and Moldova.

According to this decision, only Romanian companies engaged in the production of oil and fats, flour milling, animal feed and livestock production are entitled to import agricultural products from Ukraine or Moldova.

As reported, in May, the Council of the European Union finally approved the extension of the suspension of duties and quotas on imports of Ukrainian goods to the EU, but with additional safeguards to protect European farmers.
