Rains Could Jump-Start Full-Season Corn Planting in Brazil

After an extended dry season, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Parana received rain late last week and over the weekend. The rainfall was widespread across Rio Grande do Sul, so farmers in the state will now start to plant their 2021/22 full-season corn. The rainfall was not as heavy in Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul, but probably still good enough for some farmers to start planting their full-season corn.

Farmers in Brazil had planted 5.3% of their full-season corn as of late last week compared to 8% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 1.2% for the week. The planting pace should now pick up given the improved soil moisture.

It has been an extended dry season in central Brazil with many locations receiving their last rain in May. There are light and variable showers forecasted for Mato Grosso over the next few days, but heavier rains are not forecasted until sometime during the first half of September.
