Pulse sector development may resume in 2022
Article author:
Although the planted area of pulses shrank in 2021, their harvest rose due to improved yields. The official 2021 harvest results have not been published yet, but the State Statistics Service’s harvest data as of December 1 indicate 702 KMT of pulses (up +17% y-o-y) harvested from 311 Th ha.
However, it should be kept in mind that this volume is going to decrease because of drying and further conditioning of the beans, therefore the final figure will most likely be lower than last year.
The crop decline is also confirmed by a 34% drop in exports of late pulses.
According to UkrAgroConsult, planted area of pulses will likely increase in 2022 due to the following factors:
- persisting growth in pulse prices amid rising demand,
- expensive nitrogen fertilizers, which could be replaced with cultivation of pulse crops releasing nitrogen into the soil,
- some diplomatic progress in opening the Chinese market to Ukrainian agricultural products.
