POSCO International to bring 61,000 tons of corn for animal feeds from Ukraine
A cargo vessel carrying 61,000 tons of Ukrainian corns for animal feed will arrive at Incheon Port, west of Seoul, later this month, to help ease the shortage of animal feed that has fanned livestock prices since the outbreak of a war between Russia and Ukraine, breadbaskets of grains for food and animal feeds.
POSCO International said Monday that a vessel stationed at Pivdennyi Port in Ukraine departed for Korea carrying 61,000 tons of corn for animal feed. The ship will arrive at Incheon Port in the end of September.
About 20 million tons of grains including corn and wheat are stuck in Ukraine due to the war with Russia. Major grain companies around the world have been vying to bring some of the stocks to their countries.
POSCO International is the only Korean company that owns and operates a grain export terminal in the Port of Mykolaiv. The terminal, which opened in September 2019, has sold 2.5 million tons of grains to Korea, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East as of February.
Terminal operations have been temporarily suspended after the outbreak of Russia-Ukraine war but resumed operations by land in June.
“Food security has become every important amid global supply chain crisis and the Korean government has also presented food sovereignty reserve as a national agenda,” said an unnamed official from POSCO International. “We will continuously expand foreign grain imports on the occasion of the latest shipment and contribute to the country’s food security and price stabilization.”
