Poland imports onions from Russia en masse
Russia is the largest supplier of onions to the Polish market from non-EU countries, and the third after Germany and the Netherlands.
This is reported by EastFruit analysts with reference to the official trade statistics of Poland.
“From the beginning of the season (August 2023) to the end of December 2023, Poland purchased 24.3 thousand tons of onions from Russian suppliers. For comparison, Ukraine supplied almost 500 times less onions to Poland than Russia during the same period. By the way, even Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan shipped less onions to Poland than Russian exporters,” the experts explain.
It is noted that now wholesale prices for onions in Russia are 2.5 times lower than in Poland. Accordingly, Poland is not able to compete with Russian onions, and local traders buy them there.
It is specified that Poland is one of the world’s top 10 largest onion exporters. Moreover, it exports it mainly to the EU countries and Ukraine.
