Poland begins construction of a new deep-water port
Poland has started construction of the new Cape Pomerania deep-water container port in Świnoujście. The project is valued at approximately PLN 10 billion, according to PAP.
The project began with the construction of an access road and onshore infrastructure to support construction activities. The next stage will be the selection of a contractor for the offshore works, including the construction of breakwaters, development of the port basin, and reclamation of 186 hectares of new land.
Key specifications of the future terminal include:
- 17-meter water depth;
- a 1.3-km main quay, capable of handling up to three ocean-going container vessels simultaneously;
- an annual handling capacity of 2 million TEU.
According to Polish Deputy Infrastructure Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka, the port will serve not only the Polish market but also function as a logistics hub for eastern Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2030.
For comparison, at the Ukraine Recovery Conference held in Gdańsk in late June, Ukraine offered investors a ready-made container terminal at the Port of Chornomorsk that requires several hundred million U.S. dollars in investment to become operational.
