Panama files a complaint with the UN over Trump’s attempts to take away the Panama Canal

The Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations has sent a complaint to the organization against the backdrop of new US President Donald Trump’s plans to control the Panama Canal.
This was reported by Le Figaro.
According to the newspaper, in a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Panama expressed concern about Trump’s inaugural speech, in which he announced his intention to seize the Panama Canal.
In the appeal, the country asks to transmit a message to the 15 members of the UN Security Council, of which Panama has been a member since January 1, the article says.
As a reminder, Trump announced his intention to regain control of the Panama Canal in December 2024. He reiterated this during his inaugural speech on January 20, accusing the Panamanian government of failing to fulfill its promises regarding tariffs for passage through the canal.
For his part, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino Quintero responded that “every square meter of the Panama Canal belongs to Panama and will belong to Panama.”
