Pakistan: FPCCI rice committee addresses key challenges, opportunities to boost exports

The Central Standing Committee on Rice Production & Export Promotion, chaired by Rafique Suleman, convened a crucial meeting at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) to discuss pressing issues and future opportunities for the rice sector.

Suleman, former chairperson of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), was joined by prominent industry figures, including Group Chairman Abdul Rahim Janoo, Senior Vice Chairman of REAP Muhammad Javed Jillani and others. The meeting was also attended virtually by FPCCI Senior Vice President Saqib Fayyaz Magoo and other participants.

The committee deliberated on several critical issues affecting the industry, including recent actions by the department of plant protection (DPP), which have posed significant challenges for rice exporters. Members highlighted the urgent need for reforms to address these concerns and facilitate smoother export operations.

Another major issue discussed was the government’s recent decision to double taxation on rice exports, which the committee warned could have adverse effects on the industry. The members agreed to engage policymakers to advocate for more favourable taxation policies that support export growth.

To explore new markets, the committee proposed sending trade delegations to African countries, with the aim of promoting Pakistani rice and strengthening trade relations. Janoo stressed the importance of these efforts in increasing Pakistan’s market share and earning valuable foreign exchange for the country.

Magoo assured the committee of the FPCCI’s full support in addressing industry concerns and committed to leveraging the organisation’s platform to facilitate dialogue with the government. Suleman expressed his appreciation to the participants, emphasising the importance of collaboration between the private sector and the government to overcome challenges and seize global opportunities.

He reiterated that the country’s rice industry has vast potential to contribute to the national economy and that collective efforts are essential to ensure sustainable growth. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to resolving industry challenges and positioning Pakistani rice as a premium global product.
