Oilseed consumption in Mexico will continue to grow – FAS
Mexico’s oilseed consumption will increase in the 2026/27 season, driven by continued expansion in the country’s food processing and livestock sectors, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Information Service (FAS USDA).
The FAS forecasts domestic oilseed production to increase by 5% to 640,000 tons, while imports will rise by 1% to 8.3 million tons.
Domestic crushing volume will reach 8.3 million tons, up 2% from the previous year, thanks to increased carryover stocks from 2025-2026.
“Mexican crushers are well positioned to maintain stable crushing volume growth, supported by competitive oilseed supply prices and continued demand for both protein meal and vegetable oil,” the agency stated.
FAS noted that Mexico ranks fifth globally in feed production and continues to expand its use of soybean meal to meet the protein needs of the growing poultry and pig industries, making the animal feed sector extremely sensitive to fluctuations in raw material prices.
Soy remains the primary oilseed processed in Mexico, accounting for 84% of total crushed volume.
Soy is expected to maintain its competitive advantage over other oilseeds due to its high cake recovery rate and protein content suitable for livestock diets.
However, FAS forecasts rapeseed imports to increase by 4% to 1.4 million tonnes in 2026-2027, driven by expected improvements in processing profitability, favorable logistics, and continued growth in demand for rapeseed oil from the food industry and the vegetable oil retail market.
