Non-GM US sorghum could replace corn in Indian feed

With the US-India negotiations on importing GM grains in turmoil, the US is offering non-GM sorghum to Indian feed makers as an alternative. This comes amid rising corn prices, forcing the Indian feed industry to look for more affordable options.

Compound Feed Mills Association (CLFMA) Chairman Divya Kumar Gulati stressed that the Indian poultry industry needs urgent action to address the challenges of rising feed costs, supply disruptions and market uncertainty. The industry’s margins are expected to decline by 50 basis points in FY2025-26 due to high corn and soybean prices, which account for 90% of feed costs. However, revenue is expected to grow by 8-10% due to strong demand.

Amit Sachdev, a consultant with the American Grains Council, said that American sorghum could be a cost-effective substitute for corn. Indian corn was priced at $305 per tonne, while US sorghum was priced at $163 per tonne (80% of US corn). However, with the new crop, Indian corn prices are likely to come down.

Despite the attractive price, India has imposed a 50% duty on US sorghum imports and is requiring a pest risk assessment (PRA). The PRA documents are pending with the Indian authorities. The American Grains Council is working with CLFMA to promote the use of US sorghum in the Indian feed industry.
