New Canada-Indonesia deal boosts grain exports
Canada and Indonesia have signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at expanding grain exports and supporting agricultural growth. The deal strengthens Canada’s position in Indonesia’s competitive cereal market while promoting innovation and long-term cooperation. Dean Dias, CEO of Cereals Canada, hailed the agreement as a significant milestone for Canada’s agriculture sector, opening new opportunities for grain farmers and exporters.
The CEPA eliminates tariffs on Canadian agricultural products, including cereals, and establishes clear sanitary, phytosanitary, and technical trade rules for safe trade. A key feature is its agricultural biotechnology provision—Indonesia’s first in any trade agreement—enabling Canadian farmers to leverage advanced technologies to boost crop yields.
Indonesia is Canada’s second-largest market for non-durum wheat, with 2.4 million tonnes valued at $934 million supplied in 2024. Demand for Canadian durum wheat also remains steady. Cereals Canada anticipates the agreement will drive sustained growth and deeper ties with Indonesian millers, reinforcing Canada’s leadership in high-quality grain production.
