The United States has implemented new 10% global tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump, following a Supreme Court ruling that had previously struck down his earlier large-scale tariffs, Bloomberg reports. The tariffs will remain in effect for 150 days, until July 24, 2026, under Section 122 of the Trade Act, which grants the president temporary authority to impose duties unilaterally.

US administration officials said the White House is preparing a separate plan to potentially raise the global tariff to 15%, although no timeline for implementation has been set. President Trump also warned that higher tariffs could be imposed on countries he believes are “playing games” with existing trade agreements.

US Trade Representative Jamison Greer emphasized that Washington expects trading partners to honor existing agreements. Meanwhile, the European Union has temporarily paused ratification of deals with the US pending clarification of tariff policy, and India postponed negotiations on an interim trade agreement.

The new tariffs were introduced just hours before Trump’s address to Congress, in which he is expected to focus on his economic agenda. Public opinion shows rising dissatisfaction with his trade policies: a Washington Post/ABC/Ipsos poll indicates 64% of Americans disapprove of his tariff actions, while 34% support them.

The tariffs are enacted under a special 150-day procedure that allows the president to impose duties without congressional approval. After this period, tariffs can remain in effect only if Congress approves them.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has acknowledged that Congress currently lacks the votes to support Trump’s tariffs. He noted that Senate approval would require at least 60 votes and rejected Democratic proposals to compensate importers for previously struck-down tariffs, urging the White House to take the necessary time to navigate this unprecedented situation.
