Netherlands backs EU–Mercosur deal after long holdout
The Netherlands supports the EU’s trade deal with South America’s Mercosur bloc, informed the Dutch government on November 14, likely paving the way for adoption of the deal later this year.
The Netherlands had long withheld support for the trade agreement that the EU reached with the bloc of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay last December, some 25 years after negotiations were launched.
But the benefits for the Dutch economy outweigh the disadvantages, the government said on November 14.
European countries are expected to vote on the deal next month.
“At the moment, a large majority seems to support the proposals,” the Dutch government said.
