Morocco to increase wheat imports despite significant crop growth

Rains in March-April in Morocco improved the condition of grain crops, which suffered from drought. As a result, the yield will be higher than previously expected, and much higher than last year, according to a report by the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA).
The new wheat crop is estimated at 3.5 million tons (2.46 million tons in the current season), barley – 0.95 (0.66) million tons. Despite this improvement, production will remain below the long-term average.
According to FAS USDA estimates, in the 2025/2026 season, wheat imports to Morocco may amount to 6.7 (6.6) million tons, barley – 0.9 (1.05) million tons.
The main suppliers of wheat and barley to Morocco are the EU countries, Canada, Russia and Ukraine. From July 2024 to May 2025, Morocco imported 4.699 million tons of wheat (5.111 million tons for the same period last season), including 2.470 (3.978 million tons) from the EU countries, 1.083 (0.344) million tons from Russia, 0.829 (0.564) million tons from Canada, and 0.232 (0.151) million tons from Ukraine. Barley imports for the period under review amounted to 767.6 (1213.5) thousand tons, including 724.4 (1014.0) thousand tons from the EU and 32.7 (28.3) thousand tons from Ukraine.
