Moldova’s wheat exports fell by 11% due to poor crop quality.
Moldova’s wheat exports fell by 11% over the year. This decline is due to declining grain quality, which is considered the main factor behind the decline in export shipments and falling prices, stated Agriculture Minister Ludmila Catlabuga.
“Recent reports show that export volumes are declining and prices are falling. This is primarily due to grain quality and exporters’ pricing policies,” the minister told reporters.
She explained that this year’s wheat harvest significantly reduced the elasticity and extensibility of the dough produced from this grain’s flour during baking.
The minister cited unfavorable climatic conditions, deficiencies in the irrigation system, and generally unsatisfactory cultivation technology as reasons for the decline in quality.
“We will consult with the agricultural sector to find solutions aimed at improving crop quality and restoring export potential,” Catlabuga assured.
The minister clarified that the average purchase price of wheat in Moldova this year fell from 3.57 to 3.53 lei per kilogram.
Earlier, Moldovan farmers stated that they risked losing profits this year due to the small price difference between food and feed wheat, which discourages them from investing in improving product quality.
