Moldova plans to develop soybean production
Moldova intends to increase the production of soybeans, and the Ministry of Agriculture expects to attract investors to grow this crop. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bola.
He clarified that an increase in the gross harvest of the oilseed will help reduce import dependence in the feed sector.
“Soybeans are an important crop for crop rotation and are subsidized by the state,” explains Bolia, “Since the beans retain nitrogen in the soil, this reduces the need to apply significant amounts of nitrogen fertilizers for the next harvest, especially when their cost has increased significantly. Every year, we import significant volumes of soybean meal, which is essential for the development of livestock.”
The minister also added that it is important to develop local soybean processing, as this will create new opportunities for the food industry and help “better master the soybean crop both on the domestic and international markets.”
As a reminder, 25 thou hectares were allocated for soybean cultivation in the country this year. Most of the crop is grown in the northern regions of Moldova due to climatic conditions. The state subsidizes two thousand lei ($95) per hectare.
