Modi did not clarify whether India had abandoned purchases of Russian crude oil in exchange for Trump’s tariff reductions
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump. However, he did not specify whether the issue of India’s possible refusal of Russian oil was raised during the conversation. This is stated in Modi’s post on the social network X.
“It was wonderful to talk to my dear friend President Trump today. I am very happy that the tariff on goods made in India will now be reduced to 18%. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, I express my deep gratitude to President Trump for this wonderful announcement. When two major economies and the largest democracies of the world work together, it benefits our people and opens up enormous opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation,” the Prime Minister stressed.
Modi added: “President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability and prosperity. India fully supports his efforts for peace. I look forward to working closely with him to take our partnership to an unprecedented level.”
Modi did not say that he had stopped buying Russian oil.
Recall, Donald Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to stop buying Russian oil and instead buy more oil from the United States and Venezuela. The US President called Modi “one of his best friends, as well as an influential and respected leader of his country.”
By the way, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham welcomed India’s refusal to buy Russian oil and said that New Delhi’s decision to stop buying Russian oil increases economic pressure on Moscow and reduces the financial resources that the Kremlin uses to wage war.
