Mexico launches program to boost traditional corn varieties

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the launch of a national program in 2026 to increase the production of traditional corn varieties, targeting small-scale farmers, particularly in Mexico’s central and southern regions. The initiative aims to preserve these unique corn varieties, integral to Mexico’s cultural and biological heritage. “Without corn, there is no country,” Sheinbaum emphasized, highlighting the need to protect local varieties from global market pressures and genetically modified alternatives.

The program will complement existing initiatives like “Production for Well-being” and free fertilizer support to promote traditional corn cultivation. Sheinbaum noted that since NAFTA, corn prices, including those for traditional varieties, have been set by the Chicago Stock Exchange. In 2021–2022, a ton of corn was priced at around 7,500 pesos, but now it has dropped below 5,000 pesos, creating significant challenges for local producers.

The initiative includes direct sales from indigenous communities through businesses like tortilla factories to enhance value and ensure fairer prices. “This will support both production and community well-being,” Sheinbaum stated. The approach aims to reduce reliance on imports and bolster the economic stability of small-scale farmers.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra stressed that corn is central to Mexico’s indigenous cultures. Over 64 corn varieties are documented in Mexico, 59 of which are traditional, adapted to diverse climates. Unlike genetically modified corn, which cannot be replanted, these varieties are vital for food security and sustainable agriculture.

A recent constitutional reform to Articles 4 and 27 recognizes corn as part of Mexico’s national identity and bans genetically modified varieties. The program marks a significant step toward strengthening the agricultural sector, preserving biodiversity, and supporting farmers who maintain traditional corn cultivation methods.
