Lower import duties on maize in India needed to prevent shortages of poultry products

The All India Poultry Breeders Association wants the government to reduce import duties on maize as domestic prices are rising. Chairman Bahadur Ali asked the Ministry of Fisheries, Meat and Dairy to reconsider the 50% duty on imported maize.
He emphasized that the increased use of maize in the ethanol industry and poor harvests have led to a local shortage of poultry products. Mr. Ali said that increasing domestic production was not viable in the short term, so imports would reduce high domestic feed prices.
