Lack of moisture hampers corn and sunflower sowing in Argentina
Sowing of corn and sunflower in Argentina last week was slow due to the continuing deficit of moisture. This is reported by Zerno On-line agency with reference to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange.
Sowing of corn for the week advanced only 3.2%. It was mainly in Entre Rios province, east of Santa Fe and in the center of Buenos Aires province, where soil moisture is still present in some areas. By October 3, 13.7% of the planned area had been planted to corn, less than the average for that date.
Sunflower was sown 10.3% of the planned 1.95 million hectares. Sunflower sowing rates are far behind the average and last year’s rates.
In wheat growing areas, rains have occurred, which improved the condition of crops. Now on 45.3% of the wheat growing area the amount of moisture is sufficient. The share of wheat crops in excellent and good condition is 67% (68% a year ago).
