Kazakhstan. Intense thaws may affect or even nullify hardiness of underdeveloped winter crops
Weather condition. On January 11-20, winter crops in the south and southeast of the country were exposed to air temperatures 1…4˚C above normal, while locally in submountainous southeastern areas they were 1˚C below the long-term average.
Moisture supply. Above-normal precipitation occurred in the southeast, improving the accumulation of soil moisture. Winter grains in West Kazakhstan region on January 11-20 were covered with 10 to 17 cm of snow, therefore frost events (-19˚C) posed no risk to the plants.
Crop condition. In the southern regions, recent intense thaws during up to seven days after January 11 may affect or even nullify hardiness of underdeveloped winter wheat crops.
