Jordan announces tender for purchase of up to 120 thsd tons of feed barley
Jordan’s state grain operator has announced an international tender for up to 120,000 tonnes of feed barley, European traders reported on August 28. The deadline for submitting price offers is September 3.
The new tender follows a previous one held on August 27, in which Jordan was able to buy only 60,000 tonnes out of the planned 120,000 tonnes, which increased expectations of new purchasing activity.
The deliveries are planned in batches of 50,000-60,000 tonnes with possible unloading windows:
- October 1-15,
- October 16-31,
- November 1-15,
- November 16-30.
At the same time, the country’s authorities have announced a separate tender for the purchase of 120,000 tonnes of food wheat, for which offers are accepted until September 2.
Import dependence
Jordan remains a net importer of grain due to limited planting areas, water shortages and arid climate. According to USDA, in the 2025/26 agricultural year, the country’s wheat imports are projected at 1.15 million tons, mainly from the Black Sea region (Russia, Ukraine). Barley, critical for the feed sector, is also purchased abroad, with the government maintaining strategic reserves.
At the moment, wheat reserves provide about 10 months of domestic consumption, and barley reserves – about 8 months.
Fluctuations in the procurement market
In 2025, Jordan’s tender policy was variable: some procedures ended in partial purchases or cancellations due to inflated prices. For example, on August 19, the authorities canceled a wheat tender after there were no acceptable offers, reflecting the country’s caution amid high world prices.
