India’s sugar production to grow by 18% in MY 2025/26

India’s sugar production in the MY 2025/26, which begins in October, is set to rise 18% to 34.90 million tonnes on improved sugarcane yields and expansion in area under cultivation, the Indian Sugar and Bioenergy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) said on Thursday. Favourable monsoon conditions are supporting high cane yields, supporting production growth.
The association has urged the government to set a quota for sugar exports of 2 million tonnes and increase the amount of sugar processed into ethanol to 5 million tonnes. In the current season, these figures are 1 million tonnes for exports and 3.4 million tonnes for ethanol. Such measures are aimed at balancing the domestic market and supporting rising demand.
In the current 2024/25 season, sugar production is estimated at 26.10 million tonnes. After processing 3.4 million tonnes into ethanol and exporting 1 million tonnes, sugar stocks barely cover domestic demand, which is 27.9 million tonnes. ISMA stresses the need for prudent management of surpluses to ensure market stability in the coming season.
