India on Monday denied U.S. claims that it is “dumping” rice in the American market, stating that its exports are primarily premium-grade basmati, which generally commands higher prices than regular rice varieties.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that additional tariffs could be imposed on Indian rice, accusing India of exporting products at below-normal prices. Indian trade officials noted that, so far, there is no basis for an anti-dumping investigation.

“We don’t see a prima facie case of dumping, and as far as we know, the U.S. has not initiated any anti-dumping investigation,” Indian Trade Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said at a press conference.

India is the world’s largest rice exporter. In the 2024/25 financial year, the country shipped 20.2 million metric tons of rice, including 335,554 tons to the United States, of which 274,213 tons were basmati rice.

Last week, a delegation led by Agrawal met with U.S. Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer in New Delhi to discuss bilateral trade, including talks on a potential trade agreement between the two countries.
