India is not going to extend duty-free imports of peas

The Indian government will not extend duty-free imports of yellow peas beyond February, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Indian Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) Bimal Kothari said that the government may impose restrictions on the import of yellow peas in the interests of farmers.
“We expect that this (duty-free import of yellow peas – ed.) may not be extended or there may be some restrictions on imports,” he said.
In December 2024, India extended the period of duty-free imports of yellow peas for another two months until February 2025. The duty on yellow peas was first introduced in November 2017 at 50%. India mainly imports yellow peas from Canada and Russia.
