India imposes 30% duty on yellow peas
On October 29, the Indian government imposed a 30% import duty on yellow peas, effective November 1, 2025. The decision, announced ahead of the rabi sowing season, is intended to curb imports and stem the decline in domestic prices of pulses.
According to the notification, shipments with bills of lading dated on or before October 31, 2025, will be exempt from the duty.
Previously, the Indian government authorized duty-free imports of yellow peas until March 31, 2026, but farmer groups sought to restrict imports, which was putting pressure on domestic prices. In fiscal year 2025, India imported approximately 6.7 million tonnes of pulses, of which 2.2 million tonnes were yellow peas. Canada, Australia, and Russia are among the main suppliers.
