Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy has asked European commissioners to scrap tariffs and additional duties on fertilizer imports from Russia and Belarus, Politico reports.

The Hungarian minister warned of rising global fertilizer prices and cited supply problems stemming from the war in Iran. He said this could put EU farmers at risk and lead to higher food prices.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has led to a sharp rise in the price of nitrogen fertilizers. Given the strategic importance of this route for global trade, the market fears a reduction in food production due to a lack of available resources for farmers.

Nagy noted that Hungary could face lower yields if it does not have access to cheap fertilizers, as it depends on imports.

At the same time, the EU previously explained the introduction of new restrictions by the need to reduce dependence on Russian and Belarusian supplies, as well as reduce Moscow’s export revenues.

By decision of the Council of the European Union, new tariffs on Russian and Belarusian agricultural goods and fertilizers came into force on July 1, 2025.

The EU emphasized that profits from the sale of fertilizers from Russia and Belarus directly contribute to waging war against Ukraine.

It should be noted that among Russia’s demands during the peace talks was the lifting of sanctions on Russian food producers and exporters, as well as vessels involved in the trade in food and fertilizers.
