Global livestock production to grow by 14% in next 10 years
The consumption of animal products in the world will grow. This is accompanied by an increase in the global production of animal products (including fish, seafood and seaweed) by 14% over the next 10 years. This is stated in the latest report on future food production and demand by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
According to the report, the consumption of meat, fish and dairy products will grow by 13% over the next 10 years. Experts believe that it will grow primarily in developing countries, where wealth and population are growing. In general, however, consumption will remain highest in high-income countries. In the poorest regions of the world, it will remain low.
The authors of the report also conclude that the volume of food transportation will increase. Thus, in 10 years, 22% of all calories consumed will be imported. Accordingly, the need for transportation will increase, since production will move further and further away from the place of consumption. In this regard, the importance of international cooperation is emphasized.
Experts believe that the growth in livestock production will be achieved in part by increasing productivity per animal and per hectare. New technologies, as well as capital investment and more intensive use of fertilizers and feed additives, are cited as the main driving forces.
