France trims soft wheat crop estimate, raises maize forecast

France’s farm ministry on Tuesday cut slightly its estimate of the country’s 2024 soft wheat output to 25.43 million metric tons from 25.78 million last month, confirming the rain-hit crop as the smallest since the 1980s.
Repeated heavy rain in France, the European Union’s largest grain producer, reduced planting and hampered development of wheat crops.
For grain maize, harvesting of which is under way, the ministry raised its projection of 2024 output, including crop grown for seeds, to 14.47 million tons from 14.39 million last month.
That was now 11.4% above last year’s crop.
In barley, it cut its crop estimate to 9.80 million tons from 10.05 million tons last month.
