Farmers in Mato Grosso Have Sold 36.7% of 2021/22 Safrinha Corn

Farmers in Mato Grosso had sold 92% of their 2020/21 corn as of the end of October according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). This represents an advance of 2.8% for the month of October. The average price during October was R$ 71.88 per sack (approximately $6.05 per bushel).

For the 2021/22 safrinha corn crop that farmers will plant in January and February, they have forward contracted 36.7% of their anticipated production as of the end of October. This represents an advance of 3.9% for the month of October. The average price during October was R$ 63.28 per sack (approximately $5.35 per bushel). Farmers are encouraged by the early soybean planting which should allow for early planting of the safrinha corn as well. The ideal planting window for safrinha corn in Mato Grosso usually closes about the third week of February.

Brazil’s first corn crop is approximately 75% planted compared to 68% planted last year according to AgRural. Some of the earliest planted corn in the state of Parana is pollinating and starting to fill grain. In the municipality of Maringa, the corn is 31% pollinating, Francisco Beltrao is 8%, Ponta Grossa is 5%, Guarapuava is 2%, and Cascavel is 1%. The corn in Parana is rated 4% average and 96% good.
