Expana reports record high rapeseed area in the EU
Expana published a report on Monday stating that rapeseed cultivation in the EU’s major producing countries is growing well. The company forecasts that the EU rapeseed area in 2026/27 will reach 6.46 million hectares, up 7% year-on-year and 11% above the five-year average. This is the highest level in 16 years.
The EU rapeseed area is projected to reach 6.46 million hectares, up 7% year-on-year and a 16-year high. This will likely lead to oversupply on the spot market, putting downward pressure on prices, a significant downside factor.
Increased rapeseed raw material supply will reduce rapeseed meal production costs and increase supply. Combined with rapeseed meal futures data from the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange, such as the 2601 contract price of 2497 yuan per tonne, the 38 yuan increase reflects short-term growth. However, the expected supply increase in 2026/27 will restrain future futures prices, which is a significant downside factor.
Increased rapeseed supply will reduce raw material costs, leading to an expected increase in rapeseed oil supply in the spot market. With demand unchanged, prices are under downward pressure, which is a significant downside factor. Increased supply of rapeseed as a substitute could reduce demand for soybeans, intensifying competition in the soybean spot market and putting downward pressure on prices, which is a significant negative factor.
