EU’s share of Argentina’s exports fell from 30% to 9.8% due to a drop in soybean meal supplies
According to a report by the Rosario Board of Trade (BCR), trade between Argentina and the European Union has reached a historic low in three and a half decades. In 1990, the European market accounted for approximately 30% of Argentine exports, while in the first ten months of 2025, this share was only 9.8%.
The main reason is Europe’s declining interest in Argentine soybean meal (an important feed component) and biodiesel. This is due both to the EU’s renewable energy policy and the development of its own production.
At the same time, Europe’s importance as a supplier is also declining. Products from the EU currently account for only 13.7% of Argentine imports—one of the lowest levels in the last 35 years. This indicates a growing diversification of import sources.
It is noted that, against the backdrop of declining European demand, Asian and other emerging markets are becoming increasingly important.
Argentina’s sunflower meal exports reached a 25-year monthly high of 180,000 tonnes in September, almost 90% of which was destined for EU countries and the UK.
