EU wheat exports slightly lag last season in 2025/26
As of December 21, soft wheat exports from European Union countries since the start of the 2025/26 marketing year totaled around 10.8 million tonnes, slightly below the 11 million tonnes shipped during the same period last season, according to data from the European Commission.
Romania remains the EU’s largest exporter of soft wheat this season, having shipped 3.51 million tonnes to external markets. France follows closely with 3.45 million tonnes, while Lithuania (1.25 million tonnes), Germany (0.82 million tonnes), and Latvia (0.64 million tonnes) also rank among the leading exporters.
North Africa and the Middle East continue to be the main destinations for EU wheat. The largest volumes were delivered to Morocco at 1.99 million tonnes, followed by Saudi Arabia with 824,000 tonnes and Egypt with 778,000 tonnes.
At the same time, the EU has more than doubled its barley exports this season, which have reached 5.07 million tonnes compared with 2.2 million tonnes a year earlier. This growth reflects strong external demand and increased competitiveness of EU barley on the global market.
Meanwhile, corn imports into the European Union have declined noticeably in the current season. By December 21, EU purchases totaled 7.81 million tonnes, down from 9.89 million tonnes in the same period last year. The European Commission also noted that grain trade data for some member states, including France, Bulgaria, Ireland, and Poland, remain incomplete.
