In MY 2020/21, the European Commission reduced its estimate of feed use of major grains such as wheat and corn by 1% and 4%, respectively. At the same time, it raised the estimated use of crops such as triticale, sorghum, rye, oats and others.

The change in the feed consumption pattern entailed similar changes in the goods structure of imports – the EU decreased foreign purchases of almost all grains versus the same time last year, except for wheat (due to a crop decline in France), sorghum, and oats.

Among major grain crops, corn price increased to the greatest extent, therefore the feed use of corn was also reduced more than that of other coarse grains, UkrAgroConsult reports.

In its latest report, the USDA reduced the estimate of corn imports to the EU
by 4 MMT. It says the main reason is a crop decline in Ukraine, which is a major supplier.

Indeed, Ukraine accounted for 65% of EU corn imports last season, but its share fell to 20% in July-November 2020. As a result, Brazil with a 60% share topped the list of the biggest suppliers.
