EU seeks ways to reduce dependence on imported feed proteins

EU agriculture ministers discussed measures to reduce the Union’s reliance on imported feed proteins such as soya, which play a key role in human and animal nutrition.
The discussions examined national diversification strategies, with participants stressing the need for a common EU-wide approach. Particular attention was paid to the development of plant protein production within the Union and an integrated approach to the food chain.
The ministers also noted that new genomic technologies could contribute to more sustainable and efficient plant protein production.
The Council called on the Commission to develop and present a formal pan-EU protein strategy.
