In the first months of the new season, the EU reported a new record import of mustard seed from third countries. Current price levels may encourage farmers to grow more mustard next year.

According to the European Commission, over 33,000 tonnes of mustard seed were imported from third countries between 1 July and 19 October 2025, representing a 38.6% increase compared to the same period last year and the highest import volume since records began.

The value of imports during this period amounted to €18.723 million (-4.8%), while the average import price decreased by 30.5% to €0.57/kg compared to the same period last year.

Canada remains the largest supplier of mustard to the EU, supplying 8,506 tonnes of seed, a 3.2% increase from last year. Imports from Russia increased by 511% year-on-year to 7,381 tonnes, remaining one of the most important suppliers of mustard to the EU, although before the introduction of import duties on Russian agricultural products, the average import volume for the period was 14,609 tonnes. Meanwhile, shipments from Ukraine decreased by 50.2% to 5,174 tonnes. Brazil showed the largest increase, increasing shipments from 0.01 to 6,695 tonnes. Kazakhstan increased shipments by more than 40%, from 3,337 to 4,672 tonnes.

Belgium is the largest buyer in the EU, increasing imports by a whopping 253.1% year-on-year to 13,770 tonnes. Poland’s imports also increased by 65.3% to 8,810 tonnes, while Germany imported almost 20% less mustard seed (5,820 tonnes).
