EU and Mexico have signed a trade agreement with a focus on the agricultural sector
The European Union and Mexico have signed a revised trade agreement that opens up new opportunities for agricultural exports and removes tariffs on key products, Euractiv reports.
The revised agreement, which was negotiated in 2025, significantly expands access conditions for agricultural products, which were only partially covered in the previous version from 2000.
In particular, the document provides for the abolition of tariffs on a number of European goods, including pork, dairy products, cereals, fruit and pasta. At the same time, the EU will reduce tariffs on imports from Mexico, including coffee, fruit, chocolate and agave syrup.
The European Commission notes that the agri-food sector will be one of the main beneficiaries of the agreement, as the new conditions significantly improve market access and reduce trade barriers. In addition, the agreement provides for the protection of 336 traditional European products from counterfeiting on the Mexican market.
The EU already exports tens of billions of euros worth of agricultural and other products to Mexico, and the new agreement is set to strengthen this position. For Mexico, the EU is its third largest trading partner after the United States.
In addition to the agricultural sector, the agreement covers cooperation in the areas of digital trade, green transformation and critical resources, and is accompanied by an investment plan under the Global Gateway initiative.
