Egypt’s wheat imports increase by more than $2Bln during 1st half of 2024

Egypt’s wheat imports significantly increased in the first half of 2024, rising to $2.324 billion from $1.785 billion in the same period of 2023, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Wheat remains a crucial staple food for the country, contributing to the overall rise in raw material imports, which reached $5.621 billion in the first half of 2024, up from $5.223 billion the previous year, a gain of $397 million.

However, in June 2024, wheat imports dropped by 21.5% to $261 million, down from $332 million in June 2023. Imports of medicines and pharmaceuticals also decreased by 11.9%, totaling $233 million compared to $265 million in June 2023. Overall imports for June 2024 saw a 3.3% decline, amounting to $6 billion, down from $6.21 billion in June of the previous year.
