Egypt’s wheat imports fall by 21%

In 2024/25, which ended in June, Egypt imported 4.5 million tonnes of wheat worth $1.2 billion, Reuters reports. Compared to 2023/24, wheat imports fell by 21%.
Egypt is the world’s largest wheat importer. The government typically imports about 5 million tonnes of wheat annually to maintain its strategic reserves and subsidized bread production. Another 7 million tonnes are imported through the private sector.
Subsidized bread production requires about 8 million tonnes of wheat per year. During the latest procurement campaign, which ended in August, the government purchased 3.9 million tonnes of wheat from local farmers. The government had planned to purchase 4 to 5 million tonnes, which is about half of the harvest, which is approximately 10 million tonnes.
